“Survival Maria” by  Simona Hernandez & “It is Important to Feel the Earth” by Sonya Fe

Sonya Fe,

an internationally known artist, learned to draw before she could walk and talk. When she was a little girl her mother encouraged her to draw on the cement floors of their home, only to see her chalk drawings get mopped clean every night. Her father took her on outings where she drew buildings, trees, people, and animals. “I go back now and wish I could still live there. Sometimes it was predominantly black, sometimes Hispanic, it took turns, but I loved it — the people were unique. That environment allowed me to develop my art and a sense of humor.”  Sonya used her artist talents to excel in school. At age thirteen, she won her first scholarship and was invited to participate in a summer program at Ottis Art Institute in Los Angeles. She received her formal art education and earned a B.A. degree from Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Fe’s work has been exhibited in museums and galleries all over California, and in New York, Japan, and Mexico.

Simona Hernandez

Her earliest memories are of doing art. Eldest daughter of a photographer and nurse, Hernandez experienced cultural and economic contrasts growing up in both small towns and cities. It strongly impacted her life. Her paintings and prints have been described as Chicana art, storytelling, and reminiscent of Latin American magic realism.  “Home of the oldest art museum in the West, Sacramento has a very long history of art” notes Hernandez. “Yet, it wasn’t until after the political struggles of the 1960s those women and Chicano/a artists gained recognition. “ In 1992, she co-founded the Co-Madres Artistas, six Chicana visual artists and long-time community activists within the Sacramento area. She exhibits in major Northern California venues including the Annual KVIE Art Auction; Sacramento Magazine; and in 2006 was included in a major anthology of Mexican-American artists, “Triumph of our Communities: Four Decades of Mexican-American Art.”
