La Raza Galería Posada Announces New Gallery Exhibition,
Music Revolution!: An Exhibition of Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age of Latin Rock + “The Art of Sal Garcia” opening April 30
(Sacramento, CA)  La Raza Galería Posada will delve into the roots of California’s Latin Rock movement with a lively new art exhibition, Music Revolution!: An Exhibition of Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age of Latin Rock. This runs from April 30 through June 5, 2010 at the gallery’s Midtown location, 1024 22 St .in Sacramento. Culled from the private collection of Dr. Bernardo D. Gonzalez III, longtime manager of Latin rock legend, Malo, this exhibition will feature rare photos, collectible posters, platinum and gold records and recorded music. The legendary 1960s-1970s musicians of both the Bay Area and Los Angeles–Malo, Santana, El Chicano, War, Azteca, Tower of Power plus Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead are the focus.
A collector’s talk with Dr. Gonzalez is set for Thursday, May 13 @  7 PM at the gallery location. David Barton,(Editor-in-Chief of The Sacramento Press, regular guest host of KXJZ’s “Insight” morning talk show, the Wednesday entertainment editor with Kitty O’Neal on KFBK, and 25+ year as Pop Music Critic for the Sacramento Bee) has just been tapped as guest host.
The exhibition will precede the May 22 “Jammin’ in the Park” Festival, a family day of Latino celebration with music, dance, poetry, arts & crafts, and community awareness. Headliner for the noon-6 PM event at Sacramento’s Cesar Chavez Park (10th & J Sts.) is the 12-piece Latin Rock legend, Malo starring guitarist Jorge Santana.
Dr. Gonzalez, known in the music business world as “Dr. Rock,” was instrumental in opening the eyes of the 1960s-1970s world to what became known as Latin Rock. As a manager and concert promoter, he helped many of the musicians who shaped this sound. Originally born out of the blues and R&B, these players fused rock, jazz, and Latin music into a unique form that took both the burgeoning FM airwaves– and the neighborhoods– by storm. Nationally, it began when Carlos Santana shook the music world in 1969 with his thrilling performance at Woodstock. He was the first guitarist to skillfully blend fiery rock riffs with Latin, blues and sensuous Afro-Cuban rhythms. Santana’s unique sound opened sonic doors AND the ears of a willing politically aware generation. Malo, El Chicano, War, Azteca and Tower of Power codified Latin Rock and gave the Movement a signature sound.

In 2004, Dr.Gonzalez was asked by Ron Sansoe and Jim McCarthy, the authors of the book Voices of Latin Rock, to produce a Bay Area event for the release of the book that chronicled the amazing tale of the music that rose from the tumultuous political movements in the Bay Area of the 60s. Since then, the Voices of Latin Rock concert has been a highly anticipated yearly event in San Francisco, known for not only recognizing the heroes of the genre, but also as a major fundraiser for autism awareness.

In the gallery’s second room, the “Art of Sal Garcia” will be a worthy complement. In 2003, Garcia’s painting was chosen to be the cover art of Carlos Santana’s album, CEREMONY.
Sal Garcia was born in San Antonio, Texas and grew up in California’s Central Valley. He has resided and worked in San Francisco for the last two and a half decades.

Noted for his unique use of color, Sal Garcia is an artist of unusual range working in painting, printmaking, sculpture and woodcarving. Movement and light are also very important in his technique and reflect his early exposure to the work of the Mexican master Siquieros at Taller Siquieros in Cuernavaca, Mexico.

Sal was active in the Chicano and indigenous peoples’ rights movement in the sixties, seventies and eighties. During this period he worked with numerous activist artists groups including “La Brocha del Valle” in the Central Valley, and was an early staff member at the Galeria de la Raza where he had the opportunity to curate numerous exhibitions.

He has shown broadly in California, in the United States, and internationally. His work is in numerous public and private collections including those of the Mexican Museum and the musician, Carlos Santana.

Music Revolution!: An Exhibition of Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age of Latin Rock + The Art of Sal Garcia runs from April 30 through June 5, 2010 at  La Raza Galería Posada.
