La Raza Galería Posada’s“Jammin’ in the Park” starring Latin Rock Legend MALO; New Gallery Exhibition, Music Revolution!: An Exhibition of Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age of Latin Rock

(Sacramento, CA) La Raza Galería Posada, the not-for-profit midtown gallery and cultural center, will present a family day of Latino celebration with music, dance, poetry, arts & crafts, and community awareness on Saturday, May 22, Noon-6 PM. The headliner for the event at Sacramento’s Cesar Chavez Park (10th & J Sts.) is the 12-piece Latin Rock legend, Malo starring guitarist Jorge Santana.
La Raza Galería Posada chose the heart of downtown Sacramento, adjacent to City Hall, to attract thousands to this city’s zócalo (town center) and offer the sights, sound and smells that accompanied the music of the era known as Latin Rock. In the 1960s-70s, Malo was part of that music and activist movement.
A rare art exhibition that will run prior to and in conjunction with the “Jammin’ in the Park” festival is Music Revolution!: An Exhibition of Musical Memorabilia from the Golden Age  of Latin Rock will run from April 30 through June 5, 2010 at the gallery’s Midtown location. Culled from the private collection of Dr. Bernardo D. Gonzalez III, longtime manager of Latin rock legend, Malo, this exhibition will feature rare photos, collectible posters, platinum and gold records and recorded music. The legendary 1960s-1970s musicians of both the Bay Area and Los Angeles–Malo, Santana, El Chicano, War, Azteca, Tower of Power plus Jerry Garcia/The Grateful Dead are the focus.

A special collector’s talk with Dr. Gonzalez is set for Thursday, May 13 at 7 PM at the gallery. Dave Barton, area rock music expert and editor-in-chief of The Sacramento Press is the guest host.

About Latin Rock Legend, MALO
The story of this enduring Latin rock band begins with lead singer Arcelio Garcia. In the mid-1960s, he joined The Malibus, named after the Chevy sports car. They became a very well-known and popular band in the Bay Area, first playing mainly R&B, but later adding Latin music to the mix.
Three years into the career of the Malibus, a guitarist was brought in by the name of Jorge Santana, the brother of the already famous Carlos Santana. In 1970, The Malibus changed their name to Malo. At times numbering as many as ten or more musicians, Malo’s powerful sound included a serious horn section, which included, at various times, leading trumpet player Luis Gasca, as well as percussionists Coke Escovedo, Francisco Aguabella, Victor Pantoja and Richard Bean (of Sapo fame).
They were signed to Warner Brothers Records and recorded their first album, which was simply entitled “Malo”. Arcelio co-wrote four of the six songs, including their classics “Nena” and “Cafe.” Released in 1972, “Malo” also included “Suavecito,” which had evolved from a song they had written and been performing in clubs called “My Love.”One of the band members, Richard Bean, wrote a new lyric which gave birth to the major hit record, one that is still a signature summer song worldwide.
Malo’s current lineup includes: Arcelio Garcia, lead vocals; Jorge Santana, guitar; Gus Bogios, bass; David George, drums; Gabriel Manzo, lead guitar; Daniel Cervantes, keyboards; Brian Buekelman, trumpet; Pete Rodriguez, trumpet, trombone; Jack Musgrove trumpet, flugelhorn; and David Chavez congas, Gibby Ross timbales. Another addition to the current Malo is Arcelio’s son, Octaviano, an excellent young singer and performer in his own right.

New performers just added to the Jammin’ festival main stage are Sacramento’s supreme torch singer Keri Carr (formerly of Rowdy Kate) with a set of traditional Mexican music. As lead singer of Rowdy Kate, Mexican-American Carr wowed California audiences with her Ronstadt-like vocal power and interpretive depth.
Also on the main stage is San Francisco’s Blanca Sandoval, a bilingual singer songwriter. Her sound blends together her Latin musical roots with rock, funk, jazz, and ballads. She has recently released her debut CD, Mi Musica.
The plaza and this event honors Cesar Chavez, the legendary activist and humanitarian. Families can enjoy a day of festivities in a park setting. There will be food vendors, community information/outreach booths, an artisan center featuring area artists and craft persons, plus Latin dance clinics for kids of all ages.
