La Raza Galería Posada’s Dia de los Muertos Workshops

Saturdays: October 16th & 23rd at 10am & 1pm

Saturday October 16th: Sugar Skull Making & Decorating - 2 workshops! 10am, 1pm

Join Imelda of Sugar Skull Art and your friends here at LRGP for a day of sugar skull making and decorating for the whole family! Sugar skulls are traditional tokens of the Mexican celebrations of Day of the Dead/Dia de los Muertos/All Saints & All Souls days that are decorated with icing and food coloring to reflect the memory of a particular loved one, or just for the heck of it. Participants will have the chance to make and decorate their own skulls over the course of the workshop. Requested donation: $10 for adults, $8 for children

Saturday October 23rd: Paper Marigold/Cempazuchil - 2 workshops! 10am & 1pm

Come learn the secret to the perfectly folded, more-lifelike-than-should-be-right paper Marigolds that adorn the altares in our current exhibition and Dia de los Muertos celebrations the world over! In the Native tradition, the Marigold flower symbolizes death and rebirth, and it lends its eye-catching orange color to many of the traditional Day of the Dead ceremonies and constructions. LRGP project coordinator Christina Preston will be on hand to show young and old alike the intricacies of this delicate art. Requested donation: $10 for adults, $8 for children.

Saturday October 23rd: Mask Decorating - 2 workshops! 10am & 1pm

papermache

The classic calavera papiér mache is an icon of Dia de los Muertos the world over. If you’d like to make one of your own, don’t miss our workshop on the history and technique of this artistic style, led by Jesus Barela, a local cinematographer, artist and historian.
